Cathcart, Merrylee and Muirend Community Council

Chair’s report March 2026

Priority 1 Maintaining Pavements and Roads

No new issues raised.

Priority 2 – A New Pitch at Merrylee Primary

In early October 2025 Merrylee Primary School submitted an ENV2 expression of form to Glasgow Life, setting out the Community Council’s intention to put use £50k of our allocated Neighbourhood Infrastructure Investment Fund (NIIF) towards the pitch’s replacement and requesting the remaining funding from ENV2 funds paid by building developers to Glasgow City Council. The planned site visit to the school has now taken place and we await news on the next steps from Glasgow Life.

Priority 3 Upgrading the Couper Institute (interior and exterior)

We continue to await further information following our 16 September meeting with our Linn councillors, Sylvia Smith and Alana Ward from Glasgow Life. We are following up on the agreed actions from our February 26 meeting with our Linn councillors

  • Seek media coverage of the Big Band night and the Couper’s potential: not yet done
  • Explore establishing an Advisory Group for the Couper: in progress
  • Contact the CEO and Chair of Glasgow Life: done

Additionally, we have met Peter Sneddon of Reconnect Theatre, who is proposing to turn the Couper into a community theatre, and will discuss this under a separate agenda item. As discussed at our last meeting, we are seeking to arrange a visit to Reconnect Theatre’s Howden Park Theatre in Livingston to learn more about how the proposals might work.

Priority 4 Improving Holmlea Park

We have submitted a Neighbourhood Infrastructure Investment Fund application for improvements to Holmlea Park, and are awaiting the outcome.

Priority 5 Events and Activities for Young People

To be covered under the Events item.

Priority 6 -Improving Merrylee Park

Cala Homes has confirmed they will provide £12k towards repainting the existing play equipment in 2027. Availability of any other funding for this depends on whether NIIF funding is needed for Merrylee Pitch.

Priority 7 – Events and activities for older people

To be covered under the Events item.

Other

I have been approached by Simshill and Old Cathcart Community Council, expressing their frustration that the Linn Park accessible entrance remains closed after five years, despite funding now being in place. I have offered all possible support to them and to Friends of Linn Park in getting this situation resolved.
