Cathcart and District Community Council

Chair’s report October 24

This report provides an update on progress on those of our priority areas which have developed since our last meeting in September 2024, and on other relevant areas. My apologies that I am unable to attend this meeting due to a work commitment: many thanks to our Vice Chair Louisa Maddison for stepping in.

Priority 1 – Reopen Linn Park at Snuff Mill

Our understanding is that funding is now in place to do this but no process has yet been agreed. We will seek an update from our GCC reps at the meeting.

Priority 5 – Events

As part of our aim to protect and revive the Couper Institute, we held a highly successful Doors Open Day event, which attracted around 140 people. This led to an influx of booking requests for the Couper which we hope can be fulfilled. The Couper can be booked using this link: https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/hire?venue=21948. Yla Barrie and myself will meet Frances McSorley, Community Services Officer, shortly to plan next steps.

A sub-group of the Community Council met recently to plan 2025 events and this will be discussed as a separate agenda item.

Priority 18 – Welcome to Cathcart sign

We met the mural artists in September for a site visit. However we continue to await final permission from Scotrail, who advise that they also need to consult Network Rail.

Other – Community Council business

I am sorry to advise that Kenny Boyle has submitted his resignation as a community councillor. Kenny has been a practical and active member and I am very grateful for his participation in the community council. I have advised Glasgow City Council that we now have a vacancy: we can proceed to an election once the Council prepare the paperwork.

I have been advised that in order to receive our annual grant, the Community Council is required to undertake a self-assessment. I am seeking information on what this involves and will report back.

Finally, we intend to refresh our priorities as a community council: Mhairi Taylor will lead a consultation on this at the next meeting.

Upcoming Council and related events and funding opportunities

From time to time, Glasgow City Council advises us of meetings, consultations and funding opportunities. A selection of these is noted below for any interest and follow-up.
