Meeting Minutes

Wednesday 23rd October 2024 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Cathcart Baptist Church and Community Hub, 96 Merrylee Road, Glasgow, G43 2RA and remotely on ZOOM

Louisa welcomed everyone to the meeting and introductions and apologies were noted.

Community Council Meeting 

There were no minutes of the previous meeting to go over as these had not yet been received. 

Chairs report

Linn Park side entrance progress report : Cllr Valllis ,Procurement process is under way, a contractor should be appointed before Christmas, designs should be submitted shortly after and the work should be carried forward and completed before April 2025, at the end of the financial year. 

Friends of Linn Park are leading on this.

Events: productive year with successful events throughout the year, Doors Open Days and Micro Talks continuing to promoting the Couper Institute and library.

Seeking a replacement for Kenny Boyle who gave notice to stand down as a community councillor, the councillors in attendance agreed to have an election to replace Kenny. 

At the Next meeting we’ll run another CC consultation to make sure we’re still focussing on the right priorities for the community.. Mhari to lead on this.

Police Scotland

Officers gave a brief report of incidents reported in the areas. 

1x Fireworks

2x Speeding call

2x disturbances 

1 x driving complaint 

1 x youth call

Many calls re Sainsbury’s 

Attempt to house breaking

Traffic collision

Relatively quiet area compared to other areas of Glasgow. 

Steven mentioned red light traffic offences at Delvin rd junction and Merrylee/Clarkston rd junction especially at rush hours and during school run hours. Police said they will take these forward and pass on to relevant officers. 

Yla Barrie mentioned School free zone repeated offences plus confrontation. CC&D leaflets and comms campaign + Lollipop drivers verbal abuse, delivery drivers. We’re at an impasse, how are we meant to enforce the school car free zone?

Police said that local Head teacher / teachers should contact Police Scotland ‘Local Problem Solving team’ reachable on 101 or Police mailbox (they should have that already) any reports to this from head teachers will be actioned swiftly.

Events Planning 

Sub group meeting has taken place

Doors Open day 40 evaluation responses very detailed and helpful. 

We have an Events Plan,

MT looking for speakers

Frances Family film day Cost is £450 Sally looking for sponsors, Potentially asking for a donation, possibly selling snacks and popcorns Couper has a state of the art PA system but not Projector, ask area partnership at Newlands/Auldburn for funds if can get bid in on time. 

Considering board games night aimed at teenager (youth club) looking for volunteers and donations for board games PVG checks might be required, Yla is suggesting to look into it for the future. Cllr Vallis said will ask council if can be done through them. Will feed back at next meeting. 

March Window Wonderland possible theme could be ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ ‘ King and Queens’ 

Taste Cathcart All eateries in the area

First Aid masterclass for families, Cllr Sean Ferguson said there is some funding available from Area Partnership possibly if can get bid in on time. 

We’ve been approached by a band Sequoia, possibly to hold a concert at the Couper Institute around June time. 

Yla is proposing to move the 2025 festival towards the end of August (might be busier as families are back from hols) and finish with Doors Open Day, to be discussed nearer the time when planning the Festival. 

Planning and Area Partnership 

Area Partnership meeting has taken place. Old Cathcart and Simshill to review the NIF funding.Issue resolved regarding the split of funds between the 2 areas with a split of 60/40%. We now have 143K to spend, NRS have been asked to cost the redesign of the front of the Couper Institute.  

New christmas tree provider : cost is now 4.2K instead of 5K, everything added would be £1700 which would need to come out of the above NIF fund. 

We’ll propose to add lights to the existing trees outside the Couper. 

Licensing report nothing to report

Planning report 

Tyre shop/ car wash application has been refused. 

6 dwelling houses have been proposed at the back of the white elephant, soon to be Tesco Express, pending consideration. 

No planning application for area near the Scout hut nor the former Scotmid 

Treasurer report

Last account balance £1852.83

Expenditure £ 252.97

David Jordan wants to get involved and support the CC with fundraising and other activities. 

Councillors reports

Cllr Vallis Status of Castlemilk swimming pool in relation to Commonwealth games hoping this will improve situation and give leverage. 

‘The Yard Charity’ submitted an application to take over Linn park adventure playground.

Cllr Ferguson provided a written report. 

Litter pick with Govanhill Housing Association throughout the Merrylee area. 

Cllr McCabe provided a written report. 

AOB

One suggestion in the library box:

Can Linn Golf course be made into a 9 hole course rather than just left to fallow. 

Cllr Vallis to contact the person directly and answer their query. 

Yla: In November meeting we have Glasgow Life and Couper Library staff, so bring your thoughts. 

Also at November meeting, Mhari running planning session Action (everyone) bring the top three item in the area you’d like to see improved/created.

Louisa closed the meeting by again thanking everyone for their attendance.
